Wedding Photography in Michigan

Michigan's wedding photography landscape is defined by water. Surrounded on three sides by Great Lakes and laced with inland lakes, rivers, and wetlands, the state produces wedding photography with a freshwater character that is entirely distinct from ocean coastal settings — clearer, greener, and in summer an improbable shade of blue-green that rivals the Caribbean at certain north shore beaches.

Detroit's renaissance has produced one of the most interesting urban wedding photography environments in the Midwest. The Michigan Central Station renovation, the Corktown neighborhood, the Heidelberg Project street art district, the Shinola Hotel's campus, and the Eastern Market sheds all serve as backdrops that combine industrial history with contemporary creative energy. Detroit photography doesn't try to look like another city; it looks like itself.

Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus, the downtown Grand Rapids market district, Traverse City's Grand Traverse Bay waterfront and cherry-orchard wine country, Petoskey's Victorian resort heritage, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan's eastern shore each represent distinct Michigan wedding environments that share a landscape but nothing else.

Michigan's wedding season peaks in summer (June through August) and fall (September and October), with the two seasons producing completely different but equally strong photography.

Summer in Michigan is the Great Lakes season: warm, clear lake water, cherry orchards in full fruit near Traverse City, vineyards along the Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula at their most lush, and the white-sand dunes of Sleeping Bear or Warren Dunes State Park at peak accessibility. Summer golden hour over Lake Michigan — the sun setting into the lake rather than the ocean — produces a distinctive and unforgettable quality of light.

Fall is Michigan's other great season. Traverse City and the Leelanau Peninsula foliage peaks in mid-October; the UP (Upper Peninsula) goes earlier, in late September. Detroit's mature tree canopy through Midtown and Indian Village turns amber in October. The combination of inland-lake reflections, vineyard color, and orchard-row light in northern Michigan fall makes this one of the finest photography seasons in the Midwest.

Winter in Michigan is cold, with significant lake-effect snow across the western counties. Winter couples who embrace the season — snow on vineyard rows, frozen inland lakes, the drama of a December or February ceremony — produce some of the most striking Michigan wedding images of any season.

Detroit is our southeast Michigan anchor. We photograph at venues throughout the metro — Corktown, Midtown, New Center, and the Detroit Riverwalk, as well as estate properties in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, and the surrounding Oakland County communities. The Henry Ford estate grounds in Dearborn, the Cranbrook campus in Bloomfield Hills, and the Detroit Institute of Arts campus all appear in our portfolio.

Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus — the Law Quad's Gothic cloisters, the Arboretum's rolling gardens, and the city's downtown venues — serve the Washtenaw County market. Grand Rapids' Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is one of our most photogenic Michigan venues; the city's downtown corridor adds contemporary urban options.

Traverse City and the Grand Traverse Bay area form our northern Michigan hub. Old Mission Peninsula wineries, the Leelanau Peninsula wine trail, the East Bay lakefront, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes (for elopements within the National Lakeshore) all appear regularly. Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and the Charlevoix area extend coverage north.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula — accessed via the Mackinac Bridge — serves couples who want genuinely wild landscape: the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Tahquamenon Falls, and the Lake Superior north shore create elopement settings of raw geological power.

The Great Lakes give Michigan photography its signature quality: the impossibly clear freshwater light bouncing off Lake Michigan or Torch Lake or the Grand Traverse Bay, the scale of the dunes above the water, and the particular color of the horizon where sky meets inland sea.
