Charleston's most celebrated wedding season is spring — March through May — when the azaleas bloom at Magnolia Plantation, the air is clear, and temperatures are in the comfortable 65–80°F range. March and April are the most sought-after months and book earliest. The Low Country light in spring is extraordinary — low humidity after winter means clarity that doesn't arrive in summer.

December through February is feasible for mild-weather couples. Charleston rarely freezes, and winter weddings at plantation estates — fires in the hearths, bare oak branches against grey sky, Spanish moss in neutral tones — have a stark, intimate beauty that spring weddings don't.

Summer (June–August) is Charleston's difficult season: heat and humidity peak, and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms requires backup planning. Hurricane season technically runs through November, with the late summer peak applying to South Carolina's coast.

South Carolina Marriage License: South Carolina marriage licenses are obtained from the Probate Court in the county where the ceremony will be held (Charleston County for most weddings). Both parties must appear in person. No waiting period, blood test, or advance residency required. A county fee applies; confirm the current amount with the court. The license is valid immediately and for 30 days.

Plantation Venue Permits: Most private plantation venues include all photography in their event rental fees — no separate permit is needed once you're the venue's booked event. Public garden spaces within the plantation grounds sometimes have separate day-visitor access to manage; your coordinator confirms these arrangements.

Spring Azalea Season (March–April): If your venue is Magnolia Plantation or Middleton Place, scheduling your wedding for the azalea bloom (typically late March through mid-April) is one of the most beautiful decisions a couple can make. The bloom's timing varies year to year by 2–3 weeks — coordinate with the plantation team and monitor weather in the year leading up to your date.
