Wedding Photography in Washington

Washington State's wedding photography landscape divides at the Cascade crest into two climatically distinct regions that couldn't look more different. West of the Cascades — Seattle, the Puget Sound area, and the Olympic Peninsula — the maritime climate produces a deep, saturated green that defines Pacific Northwest photography: dark Douglas fir forests, moss-covered rock faces, and the particular quality of overcast coastal light that makes Washington's outdoor photography exceptional even on gray days.

Seattle is one of the Pacific Northwest's most visually distinctive cities. The combination of the Puget Sound waterfront, the Seattle skyline from Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill, the Pike Place Market's century-old market structure, and the Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum give photographers a range of urban and natural settings within a 20-minute radius of downtown.

East of the Cascades, the landscape shifts to high desert plateau, ponderosa pine, and the extraordinary Palouse — rolling wheat-field hills in Whitman and Palouse counties that produce some of the most visually distinctive agricultural landscape in the world. Spokane, the eastern hub, has its own urban wedding market anchored by the Spokane River falls at Riverfront Park and the renovated downtown arts district.

Washington's west-side wedding season peaks June through September — the driest period in the maritime climate. Seattle's famous rain is primarily a fall and winter phenomenon; July and August are reliably clear, and June and September are generally pleasant with occasional rain requiring contingency plans.

The San Juan Islands, accessible by Washington State Ferry or small aircraft, are particularly desirable in summer. Friday Harbor, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island's rural characters attract destination couples who want a genuinely island experience without international travel. The ferry-accessible nature of the islands means guests can attend with manageable logistics.

Fall in the Cascades — the Leavenworth area's larch-and-aspen color, the North Cascades' high-country hardwoods — peaks in late September and early October. Leavenworth's Bavarian village character makes it one of Washington's most photographically distinctive autumn destinations, with the surrounding Wenatchee National Forest turning gold above the Alpine-architecture village.

Eastern Washington's Palouse has two photography seasons: late June through July, when the winter wheat is tall and green before harvest, and the golden post-harvest period of late July through August when the cut fields create a rippled golden landscape at sunrise. Both windows produce images specific to this landscape.

Seattle is our Washington State hub. We photograph at the Kerry Park and Bhy Kracke Park Queen Anne overlooks, throughout the Capitol Hill and Eastlake neighborhoods, at the Washington Park Arboretum's Japanese Garden, at the Olympic Sculpture Park's waterfront, and at the Discovery Park lighthouse and bluff areas. Pike Place Market and the surrounding waterfront area, the South Lake Union neighborhood's contemporary venues, and Volunteer Park's conservatory all appear regularly.

The San Juan Islands are reached by Washington State Ferry from Anacortes. We coordinate our own ferry travel and accommodation for San Juan events, with Friday Harbor as our primary island anchor and Orcas Island's Doe Bay area as our most scenic elopement territory.

The Cascades — Snoqualmie Pass corridor, the Leavenworth approach via Stevens Pass, and the North Cascades Scenic Highway near Mazama — provide mountain landscape access from Seattle within 2 to 3 hours. Leavenworth's Main Street and the Enchantments wilderness above the town serve our central Cascades market.

Olympic Peninsula — Hurricane Ridge above Port Angeles, the Hoh Rainforest's ancient Sitka spruce and Bigleaf maple, the Olympic coastline at Rialto Beach — provide some of the most dramatic and rain-forest-specific portrait settings in the Pacific Northwest.

Pacific Northwest light — the soft, diffuse quality of overcast sky that flatters subjects without harsh shadows — is genuinely different from sunbelt photography conditions, and Washington's photographers know how to use it. We embrace overcast days rather than fighting them, knowing that the flat, even light they provide is often superior to bright midday sun for portrait work. When the sun does appear through Cascades cloud, the light quality is gold and clean in a way specific to the maritime Northwest.
