Wedding Photography in West Virginia

West Virginia is the most overlooked wedding photography state in the East. The Mountain State's combination of Appalachian wilderness, the dramatic New River and Gauley River gorges, the Allegheny Highlands' open plateau, and the historic Greenbrier Resort's grand Gilded Age estate provide wedding photography settings that outperform the state's modest national profile in the wedding market.

Charleston, the state capital, has an arts corridor centered on the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, the West Virginia State Museum on the Capitol grounds, and the Kanawha River waterfront. The Capitol dome and surrounding building complex provide formal architectural settings, and the Kanawha State Forest minutes from downtown offers natural settings in surprising proximity to the city.

The New River Gorge National Park — elevated to national park status in 2020, the most recent national park designation in the eastern United States — centers on the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest single-arch steel span in the western hemisphere. The bridge and its gorge setting are one of the most recognizable landscape features in Appalachia, and the surrounding National Park accommodates ceremony activity at designated sites by NPS permit.

West Virginia's most photogenic outdoor wedding season runs May through October. Spring arrives with trillium, wild azalea, and mountain laurel blooms across the Appalachian ridges — the New River Gorge's rocky slopes are covered with mountain laurel in late May and early June, and Blackwater Falls State Park's hemlock-and-hardwood forest shows spring emergence through May.

Fall is West Virginia's most spectacular season. The state's mixed hardwood forests — the combination of oak, maple, beech, cherry, and birch — produce fall color that rivals any Appalachian state. Canaan Valley, at 3,200 feet, typically sees peak color in the first week of October. The New River Gorge's rim-level viewpoints at Grandview overlook and Hawk's Nest State Park look south across the gorge's fall color with the river visible far below.

The Greenbrier Resort near White Sulphur Springs is operational year-round, with winter representing its own luxury-hotel atmosphere quite different from the warmer months' outdoor gardens and golf course settings.

Summer in the New River Gorge area is active and accessible — whitewater season brings adventurers from across the region, and the gorge's natural air conditioning means temperatures at river level are considerably cooler than surrounding lowlands.

The New River Gorge National Park is our most significant West Virginia photography location. We photograph at the Long Point Trail overlook with the bridge visible across the gorge, at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center boardwalk, and at designated NPS ceremony sites within the park. The town of Fayetteville, the National Park gateway community, has its own historic Main Street character that provides portrait settings distinct from the gorge itself.

Harpers Ferry — where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet at the West Virginia-Virginia-Maryland tripoint — provides Civil War-era historic streetscape at the lower town, the Jefferson Rock overlook above the confluence, and the Appalachian Trail access into the surrounding National Historical Park. It is one of the most layered historical portrait settings in the mid-Atlantic region.

The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs is one of the most historic grand resort properties in the United States, with 200 years of operation and grounds that have hosted everyone from Civil War generals to modern presidents. Its formal garden estate and the surrounding Greenbrier Valley landscape serve the high-end destination wedding market.

Charleston's Clay Center, the Capitol complex grounds, and the Kanawha City riverfront serve our urban West Virginia market. Canaan Valley Resort and the Blackwater Falls State Park lodge area serve the northern highland market.
