Indian Wedding Videography

Film has one advantage over stills at an Indian wedding and one disadvantage. The advantage is sound: the dhol at the baraat, the pandit's recitation, your uncle's speech going somewhere no one expected. None of that survives in a photograph. The disadvantage is that a week of functions cannot be compressed into a three-minute highlight without throwing away most of it.

So we deliver both. A highlight film that someone who was not there will actually watch, and longer documentary edits of the functions that deserve to be kept whole — the ceremony, the speeches, the sangeet performances your cousins rehearsed for two months. Travel and accommodation are quoted separately.

Coverage is quoted function by function, not as a flat day rate:

• Mehndi and haldi — texture, colour and family in close quarters. Usually the warmest footage of the week.
• Sangeet — the function that most needs filming, because choreographed performances are the one part of a wedding that is genuinely a performance. Stage light is difficult and audio matters more than it does anywhere else.
• Baraat — moving, outdoors, loud. Filmed with stabilised handheld rather than from a tripod, because standing still is not an option.
• Ceremony — recorded end to end with dedicated audio on the pandit or granthi, so the ritual is intelligible rather than ambient noise.
• Reception — speeches with wired audio, stage greetings, and the dancing after.
• Vidaai — short and almost always the emotional peak of the edit.

A short highlight film, cut to be watchable by people who were not at the wedding and shareable without an explanation.

Full-length documentary edits of the ceremony and the speeches, with clean audio. These are the files families come back to years later, and they are the reason we record audio separately rather than relying on the camera.

Where the schedule allows, a same-day edit — a short cut from the morning functions played at the reception that evening. It has to be planned in advance because it changes how the day is shot, so ask about it when you enquire rather than on the day itself.

Unobtrusively, and with the audio planned before anything else. Most wedding films fail on sound rather than on picture: a beautiful ceremony shot with an on-camera microphone twenty feet from the mandap is unusable. We mic the officiant and the speeches, and we test it before the guests arrive.

We stay out of the photographer's frame and expect the same in return — at a multi-day wedding the photo and film teams are working the same rooms for a week, and it goes better when both were booked to work together. Booking photography and film with us is generally simpler for exactly that reason.

Sangeet needs a lighting conversation. Stage wash that looks striking to the eye is often unrecoverable on camera — deep magenta and heavy haze especially. A short call with your venue or DJ beforehand usually fixes it.

Speeches need a microphone that we can tap into. If speeches are unamplified, tell us in advance so we can bring our own solution rather than improvising.

Say when the vidaai is. It is the shortest function of the week and the one most likely to be missed while equipment is being packed.

Travel and accommodation are quoted separately, so the venue list is not restricted by geography. Most enquiries come from the metros with the largest South Asian communities — New York and northern New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas and Houston, Atlanta, the Bay Area and greater Los Angeles — along with destination weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Multi-venue and multi-city weeks are common and entirely workable, but they change the crew size and the equipment list. Mention it when you enquire.
