Why Florence for Your Destination Wedding

Florence is, in the most literal sense, the most beautiful city in the world. This is not sentiment — it is the considered verdict of 600 years of artists, writers, and pilgrims. The Renaissance was essentially a sustained argument that beauty matters, and Florence is its physical proof. When you marry here, you marry inside this argument.

As a photographer in Florence, what strikes me every time is the quality of the light in the late afternoon. The ochre and terracotta of the city's buildings — the Palazzo Pitti, the Ponte Vecchio, the Santa Croce basilica — absorb the sun through the day and radiate it back warm and golden from about 4pm onwards. Walking the Lungarno in the hour before sunset, with the Arno below reflecting the domes and towers, is an experience that photographs itself.

Beyond the city centre, the hills of Fiesole above Florence offer panoramic views over the terracotta roofscape, and the Tuscan countryside begins immediately beyond the city boundary — cypress-lined driveways, olive groves, and private villas within 20 minutes of the Duomo. The range available to a Florence wedding — from formal palazzo ceremony to rustic Tuscan dinner under the stars — is unmatched in Italy.

Best Wedding Venues in Florence

Palazzo Borghese, Florence — A 16th-century frescoed palazzo in the heart of the city, considered by many the finest private event space in Florence. The Salone delle Feste with its gilded ceiling and the private courtyard garden are extraordinary for both ceremonies and receptions. Up to 300 guests.

Villa Corsini, Florence — A noble Florentine villa with formal Italian gardens, a frescoed chapel, and a ballroom with original 17th-century décor. The cypress avenue entrance is one of the most photographed approaches in Tuscany. Up to 200 guests.

Forte di Belvedere — The 16th-century Medici fortress above the Boboli Gardens, with an extraordinary panorama of Florence from its ramparts. Normally accessible only to the public, the Forte opens exclusively for private events — rare and magnificent. Up to 1,000 guests for large events.

Villa La Massa, Candeli — A 16th-century Medici villa on the banks of the Arno, eight kilometres from the city centre. Private gardens, Arno riverfront terrace, and a sense of aristocratic ease. Up to 150 guests.

Convento dell'Annalena — A Renaissance convent near the Ponte Vecchio converted to a private event venue. Cloistered garden, frescoed halls, and extraordinary intimacy in the heart of the Oltrarno neighbourhood. Up to 100 guests.

Villa Bardini, Fiesole — A panoramic hilltop garden estate above Florence with one of the finest views of the city's skyline available for private events. The terraced Baroque garden descends through wisteria and roses towards the cityscape below. Up to 200 guests.

Il Salviatino — A 15th-century villa on the hillside above Florence with a stunning infinity pool, panoramic city views, and private grounds. The pool terrace at golden hour with the Duomo visible below is one of the most extraordinary compositions I work with in Italy. Up to 80 guests.

Best Time for a Florence Wedding

April and May are superb — the Arno valley is green, the wisteria at Villa Corsini and across the Fiesole hillside is at peak, temperatures are ideal (20–24°C), and Florence's famous golden light is not yet competing with July heat. Late September and October are equally compelling: the Chianti harvest is underway in the hills, the quality of afternoon light is exceptional, and the city has returned to its quieter, more intimate self after the summer crowds.

June is warm and beautiful but the tourist volume in the city centre is very high by late June — I advise pre-dawn city portrait sessions (the Ponte Vecchio at 5:30am is perfection) or shifting portrait sessions to the Fiesole hills above the crowds.

July and August bring intense heat to the Arno valley floor. Venue interiors with their thick stone walls stay cool, and I work almost entirely in morning and evening hours outdoors. The light remains extraordinary — Florence can never truly have bad light.

What to Expect: Shooting in Florence

Florence wedding photography requires a specific approach to the city's crowds and heritage regulations. Photography in public spaces is unrestricted, but tripods and lighting equipment require permits in most historic areas. I work handheld in available light, which suits the warmth and intimacy of Florentine spaces.

For the portrait session, I favour the quieter corners of the historic centre: the Oltrarno neighbourhood, the cloisters of Santa Maria Novella, the rose garden on the Piazzale Michelangelo hill at 6am, and the view from the hillside town of Fiesole looking back over the city. The Piazzale Michelangelo itself — the famous panoramic viewpoint — is magnificent but crowded; I go there either at dawn or skip it in favour of the less-known belvedere viewpoints along the hillside.

The Ponte Vecchio at first light, before the jewellery shops open and the tourist stream arrives, is genuinely magical and relatively uncrowded before 7am. The Arno below catches the morning sky perfectly.

I always build a scout day into Florence weddings to map the venue's specific light movement and confirm portrait locations. Florence is two hours from Rome by high-speed train and four hours from Venice — easy to reach within a broader Italian wedding tour.

Planning Tips for Florence Weddings

Legal civil weddings in Florence are conducted at the Palazzo Vecchio or the municipality's dedicated wedding hall — both magnificent settings in themselves. Documents must be submitted to the comune at least 30 days in advance; translated certified copies of all documents are required. Start this process at least four months before your date. A specialist Italian wedding planner is essentially mandatory for the paperwork process.

Religious ceremonies in Florence's churches are subject to specific diocesan regulations. Non-Catholic ceremonies may be held in Anglican churches (St Mark's Church near Santa Croce) or in non-denominational villa chapels.

Photography permits: the Boboli Gardens, the Bardini Garden, and the Forte di Belvedere all require photography permits for professional use; your planner will arrange these. The Ponte Vecchio and other public spaces require no permit but tripods are restricted.

Accommodation note: Florence's most beautiful hotels — the Four Seasons at Villa della Gherardesca, the Portrait Firenze, and the Lungharno Collection — all have private gardens available for guests and provide excellent sunrise and sunset portrait settings within a short walk or drive of the main venues.
