At a Glance

Cozumel lies off the coast of Quintana Roo, a short ferry from Playa del Carmen. Its western, leeward shore is sheltered and holds all the resorts; its eastern shore faces the open Caribbean and is largely undeveloped. It is the quieter alternative to Cancun and Tulum, with the same climate.

Why Couples Marry in Cozumel

Cozumel is best known for diving — the reefs off its southwest coast, part of the same system that runs down to Belize, made the island's reputation. For a wedding, the relevant consequence is the water: the leeward side is protected, exceptionally clear, and calm in a way the mainland beaches around Cancun often are not.

The island is also less built up than the Riviera Maya. There is one town, San Miguel, and a single ring road; away from the resort strip the island is scrub and empty coastline. Couples who find Cancun overwhelming and Tulum too self-consciously styled tend to end up here.

Where Weddings Happen in Cozumel

Everything happens on the west side. The resorts sit north and south of San Miguel along the leeward shore, facing the mainland, which means the sun sets over the water and over the Riviera Maya skyline in the distance. The eastern shore is open Caribbean — beautiful, wind-scoured and largely undeveloped, with strong currents that make it unsuitable for swimming and better as a portrait location than a ceremony site.

The cruise schedule is the planning variable nobody mentions. Cozumel is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, and when several ships are in, San Miguel and the nearby beach clubs are transformed. Ship schedules are published well in advance and are worth checking against your date if any part of the day involves the town.

Properties couples ask about most often include Cozumel Palace and Presidente InterContinental Cozumel on the leeward coast.

Best Time for a Cozumel Wedding

The dry season runs November through April, matching the rest of Quintana Roo — lower humidity, minimal rain, and the clearest water for anything involving the reef. December through March is peak.

May through October is wetter, with afternoon storms, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November with the greatest risk from August into October. Cozumel has been hit directly in the past and a late-summer date needs a contingency plan rather than optimism. Sargassum, the seaweed that affects the mainland Riviera Maya beaches, tends to be lighter on Cozumel's sheltered western shore than on the east-facing mainland — but it varies by year.

Sunset falls between roughly 5:30 PM and 7:20 PM across the year. On the leeward coast it goes down over the channel, which makes late-afternoon ceremonies the obvious choice.

How We Cover a Cozumel Wedding

Full-day documentary coverage, from preparations through the reception. Travel is included in the package price, including the ferry or the domestic flight across from the mainland.

We arrive ahead of the wedding day. The crossing from Playa del Carmen is weather-dependent and the ferry schedule thins in the evening, so a same-day arrival is not something to build a wedding around.
