Two things make Barbados unusually practical for a destination wedding. The first is the paperwork: the island is well known for a straightforward licensing process for visiting couples, without the extended residency requirements some neighbouring islands impose. The second is the geography — because Barbados is coral rather than volcanic, it has no mountain roads, and moving guests between a ceremony, a reception and a hotel is measured in minutes rather than hours.

It is also the easternmost island in the chain, which puts it slightly outside the track many Atlantic storms follow through the Caribbean. That is a tendency rather than a guarantee, but it is a real factor when comparing dates against islands further west.

The west coast — often called the Platinum Coast — is the calm side. The water is flat, the beaches are sheltered, and most of the established wedding properties sit along it between Bridgetown and Speightstown. The south coast is livelier and more built up. The east coast is a different island altogether: open Atlantic, heavy surf, wind, and the cliffs and rock formations around Bathsheba, which are spectacular for portraits and entirely unsuited to a ceremony.

That contrast is the opportunity. A west-coast ceremony and an east-coast portrait session an hour later give two sets of images that look like different countries.

Properties couples ask about most often include Sandy Lane and Cobblers Cove on the west coast, The Crane on the southeast cliffs, and Fairmont Royal Pavilion on the calm side.

The dry season runs roughly December through May, with the lowest rainfall and the highest demand. June through November is wetter, and the Atlantic hurricane season falls in that window with peak activity from August into October — though Barbados's easterly position means direct hits are less frequent than on islands further along the chain.

Temperatures are steady year-round, in the mid to high eighties Fahrenheit, moderated by the trade winds that blow consistently from the east. Those winds are why the east coast has surf and why the west coast is calm — and why a west-coast ceremony is the sheltered choice.

Sunset sits between roughly 5:40 PM and 6:30 PM through the year. On the west coast it drops over open water, which is why late-afternoon ceremonies are the norm there.
