At a Glance

Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language, which removes a layer of friction for American couples. It offers two entirely different settings within a short flight of each other: the barrier-reef cayes, and the jungle and Maya sites of the mainland interior.

Why Couples Marry in Belize

The Belize Barrier Reef runs the length of the coast and is the second largest reef system in the world. It shelters a string of cayes — low sand islands with shallow water on the leeward side — where most beach weddings take place.

What distinguishes Belize from the islands further east is that the mainland is genuinely worth a day of its own. Rainforest, river caves, and Maya sites like Xunantunich and Caracol sit within a few hours of the coast, which makes a two-location wedding week realistic rather than aspirational. English as the working language and the Belize dollar's fixed relationship to the US dollar remove the usual small frustrations.

Where Weddings Happen in Belize

Ambergris Caye, and its town of San Pedro, is the busiest wedding destination — the largest of the cayes, with the most hotels and the most infrastructure. Placencia, on a narrow peninsula in the south, is quieter and has a longer stretch of mainland beach. Caye Caulker is smaller and more informal again.

Getting there is part of the planning. International flights arrive at Belize City (BZE), and the onward leg to San Pedro or Placencia is a short hop on a small aircraft — a fifteen to twenty minute flight in a plane that seats a handful of people, with strict baggage limits. Guests need to be told this in advance rather than discovering it at the airport.

One practical note that no brochure mentions: sandflies are present on some beaches, particularly around dawn and dusk, and vary enormously between properties and seasons. It is a fair question to ask a venue directly.

Properties couples ask about most often include Victoria House Resort and Matachica on Ambergris Caye, and Turtle Inn on the Placencia peninsula.

Best Time for a Belize Wedding

The dry season runs roughly from December into May and is when nearly all Belize weddings happen. Rainfall is low, humidity is manageable, and the water on the reef side is at its clearest. February through April is the peak.

June through November is the wet season, and the Atlantic hurricane season falls within it, with the highest risk from August into October. Rain in the wet season is usually heavy and short rather than all-day, but the risk profile in late summer is real.

Sunset falls between roughly 5:15 PM in December and 6:35 PM in June. On the leeward side of the cayes the sun sets over the water; on the eastern shore it rises over the reef, which makes early-morning portraits a genuine option rather than a compromise.

How We Cover a Belize Wedding

Full-day documentary coverage, from preparations to the end of the reception. Travel is included in the package price — flights, accommodation and ground transport, including the domestic leg out to the cayes, are already covered.

We arrive ahead of the wedding day, which in Belize usually means the day before at minimum: the small-aircraft connection is weather-dependent and not something to leave to a same-day arrival.
