The green heart of Italy — medieval abbeys, hilltop silence, and your story on film

At a Glance

Tara Weddings creates cinematic wedding films in Umbria — Italy's green heart, where medieval hilltop towns, ancient Benedictine abbeys, and an agricultural landscape untouched by mass tourism create conditions for deeply intimate, unhurried filmmaking. No Amalfi Coast crowds, no Tuscan coach tours — just the silence of the Apennines and a landscape that has barely changed in five centuries.

Our Cinematic Approach in Umbria

Umbria has a different quality of silence from Tuscany. The landscape is less manicured, the hills steeper and more forested, the medieval towns less visited and more genuinely lived-in. Filming here requires an approach that honours that authenticity — we do not impose a glossy production aesthetic on a landscape that rewards understatement.

The light in Umbria has a particular quality in late afternoon: the Apennine hills cast long shadows across the valleys, and the remaining lit surfaces — the hilltops, the stone church facades, the terrace of a farmhouse — glow with an intensity that the shadowed valley floor below makes more vivid by contrast. We schedule all exterior filming for this window.

The sound of Umbria is among the most cinematically distinctive in Italy. The silence is deep enough that individual sounds are audible at great distance: the bell of a church in the valley below, the bark of a farm dog, the combine harvester on a hillside two kilometres away. This deep ambient quiet makes vow recordings from Umbrian venues exceptionally clean and present — there is none of the tourist-crowd noise that can complicate audio in more famous Italian locations.

We work frequently in the hill towns of Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna, and Trevi, as well as the countryside estates between Assisi and Spoleto. Each town and each estate has distinct architectural character, and we adapt our approach accordingly — from the frescoed interiors of a Spello palazzo to the rough stone walls of a Bevagna farmhouse.

Best Venues for Wedding Films in Umbria

Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle — The 8th-century Benedictine abbey in the Nera valley is perhaps the most cinematically powerful ceremony venue in all of Umbria. The Lombard-era frescoes, the Roman sarcophagus in the apse, the ancient stone floor — the weight of twelve centuries of liturgical life is palpable in every frame. The abbey's gorge valley setting means natural light enters the church only in early morning, giving a magical quality to dawn ceremonies.

Castello di Petroia — A 10th-century castle in the woods above Gubbio, with stone towers, frescoed halls, and a complete lack of commercial polish. The castle has been in the same family for centuries and its rough authenticity — the uneven floors, the ancient furniture, the working kitchen — gives films here a quality of real inhabited history rather than staged heritage.

Villa Zuccari, Montefalco — An Umbrian country house surrounded by the vineyards of the Sagrantino wine country. The formal garden, the cypress avenue, and the warm stone of the house are classic Umbrian architecture, and the Montefalco skyline — the hilltop village visible across the vineyard — provides a layered horizon that rewards wide establishing shots.

La Borghese Estate, Spoleto — A contemporary agriturismo estate outside Spoleto with views across the Spoleto valley toward the ancient aqueduct. The estate's olive grove and the Spoleto Cathedral visible on the distant hillside give a specifically Umbrian historical depth to the landscape framing.

Convento di Agghielli, Bevagna — A restored 14th-century Franciscan convent with a cloister garden and the olive-covered hillside above. The Franciscan simplicity — plain stone, a single bell, the vegetable garden — gives this venue an almost meditative cinematic quality that suits intimate weddings perfectly.
