November through April is the Dominican Republic's dry season and optimal wedding window. The Punta Cana coast — on the island's far eastern tip — benefits from consistent trade winds that moderate humidity year-round, making even the shoulder months (April–May) more comfortable than many Caribbean destinations.

December through March is peak season: sunshine is most reliable, Caribbean sea conditions are calmest, and the resort atmosphere is most festive. February is particularly popular given Valentine's proximity and ideal weather.

The North Coast near Puerto Plata operates on a different weather pattern — slightly wetter year-round due to the trade winds hitting the mountains from the north. Winter (December–March) is actually the rainiest season on the North Coast, while summer is drier. Couples planning a North Coast or Samaná wedding should consult with local planners about seasonal patterns specific to that microregion.

Hurricane season (June–November) applies throughout the DR. The island has historically been significantly impacted by major hurricanes — comprehensive weather-related travel insurance is non-negotiable for any late-summer or fall wedding.

The Dominican Republic rewards photographers who explore beyond the resort perimeter. The country's interior — the Cordillera Central highlands, the coffee-growing valleys, the colonial zone of Santo Domingo — offers visual material entirely distinct from the beach resort experience, and integrating even a single location shoot in the historic center produces images with real cultural weight.

Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas — has 16th-century fortresses, cathedrals, and cobblestone plazas that photograph with extraordinary historical gravitas. For couples with a day to spare in the capital, a late-afternoon portrait session in the Zona Colonial followed by dinner on the Malecón is an experience I recommend without hesitation.

For Punta Cana wedding days, I structure photography around the resort's most distinctive settings: typically an early morning beach session before wind and foot traffic arrive (6:30–8 AM), an indoor or garden portrait session midday, and the ceremony and reception at golden hour and into evening.

The Dominican Republic has a strong tradition of merengue and bachata music — its national musical heritage — and I always incorporate the energy of the reception dance floor into the coverage. Legal Marriage Requirements: Getting legally married in the Dominican Republic requires: valid passports, certified and apostilled birth certificates, proof of single status (sworn affidavit), blood tests at a DR clinic, and registration with the Procuraduria General of the Republic. The process takes approximately 5–7 business days. Most international couples arrange legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in the DR — all major resorts are experienced with this model.

Getting There: Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) receives direct flights from most major US, Canadian, and European cities. La Romana and Santo Domingo have their own airports but with fewer direct international flights — connections through Punta Cana or Miami are typical.
